Farta Brutos

Farta Brutos is one of the few restaurants that has stood the test of time in ever‑changing Bairro Alto. Here, you’ll also find a slice of bohemian Lisbon’s history. The walls are lined with photos of familiar faces—Nobel laureate José Saramago had a regular table here, and the cod fritters he always ordered now bear his name. They’re just one of the many traditional dishes still served.

Mon–Sat 5:00–11:00 PM.

Torres

Open since 1968, Torres is a gastronomic institution. With four distinct dining rooms, all with classic decor, the star dish is, as expected in Vila Verde, pica no chão (rice cooked in blood). The papas de serrabulho (pork blood pudding) and roast kid goat à la Torres are equally good.

O Arcoense

In light tones, the dining room at Arcoense is modern and spacious. At first glance, you might not imagine that this is one of the best traditional restaurants in the region. Everyone stops by here, especially for the cabrito assado à padeiro (roast kid goat) that wins over anyone (along with the service).

Serra e Mar

Close to the typical houses of Santana, Serra e Mar is known for its hearty dishes, and the tuna steak with fried corn is highly praised. A simple and unpretentious place with a menu full of traditional dishes, from the mountains and the sea, as the name suggests.

Chalet Vicente

It owes its name to the family of photographers who used to spend their summer holidays in this house, now a restaurant: the Vicentes. Outside, there’s a typically Madeiran garden, and the counter and grill area resemble an old tavern. As for the menu, you can’t go wrong with anything – everything that arrives at the table is recommended, like the usual scabbard fish fillet with banana.
