Bonança

Bonança occupies the building of the Lisbon Naval Association at Doca de Belém, and it’s impossible not to be swept up by the grandeur and energy of the space. A 1940 mural depicting King Manuel’s embassy procession to Pope Leo X dominates the room and inspires a kitchen that celebrates the sea with dishes like carabineiro rice. At night, the vibe shifts to music and dancing.

Snob Bar

Located on Rua do Século, Snob Bar has been a Lisbon nightlife landmark since 1964. In 2024 it changed hands and underwent renovations—not to become something else, but to restore its essence and add comfort. The iconic bife à Snob remains the house’s ex‑libris, as do the croquettes. Don’t be surprised by the closed door—you have to ring the bell to enter. It’s one of the few places in Lisbon where you can eat after hours.

O Velho Eurico

There’s no restaurant in Lisbon quite like Velho Eurico—and many follow in its footsteps. Zé Paulo Rocha and Fábio Algarvio took an old tasca and gave it new life without erasing its history, and with plenty of attitude. The music is loud, the service close and fuss‑free, and the food consistently great. Excellent Portuguese small plates, backed by fine‑dining technique and know‑how. Reservations are essential (and early), but a daily waitlist opens—arrive early to secure a place.

Tue 7:30–10:30 PM; Wed–Sun 12:00–3:00 PM / 7:30–10:30 PM.

Sr. Manuel Seafood Bar

On the lively, bustling Rua Amarela, this is the perfect spot for lovers of great small plates. Sr. Manuel Seafood Bar is a modern cervejaria, and as the name suggests the menu focuses on seafood. Alongside more traditional dishes, there are more sophisticated options. The cocktail list is well worth exploring.

Lumi Rooftop

At the top of The Lumiares Hotel & Spa, yet open to the city from the outset. Lumi Rooftop aims to serve Lisbon and its locals. The atmosphere is calm, and the striking city view sets the scene. In the kitchen, traditional recipes are reinterpreted. The cocktail list is worth a look.

Farta Brutos

Farta Brutos is one of the few restaurants that has stood the test of time in ever‑changing Bairro Alto. Here, you’ll also find a slice of bohemian Lisbon’s history. The walls are lined with photos of familiar faces—Nobel laureate José Saramago had a regular table here, and the cod fritters he always ordered now bear his name. They’re just one of the many traditional dishes still served.

Taberna Sal Grosso Alfama

Much of the phenomenon of Lisbon’s new tascas is owed to Taberna Sal Grosso in Alfama, of which Velho Eurico is today the most talked‑about example. In this small space a movement was born that breathed new life into tradition: well‑made, traditional dishes designed for sharing. The team that launched it has since moved on, but the spirit remains. Beyond Alfama, Taberna Sal Grosso also opened near the Assembly of the Republic and in Évora.

Bairro do Avillez

Bairro do Avillez is a good snapshot of chef José Avillez’s vision and the gastronomic richness of his universe. In Chiado, under one roof, it brings together different concepts. You can grab a quick pizza or linger at the table in true Portuguese fashion. Some offerings are traditional, others more daring—and the irreverent Mini Bar is literally hidden inside.

Brilhante

Reviving the spirit of Lisbon’s old brasseries, Brilhante is imposing. The counter is at the center of everything, though there are also secluded tables. Luís Gaspar has created an instant classic with the Bife à Brilhante, inspired by the old Bife à Marrare served in the historic Lisbon cafés—the house’s star dish. The bar boasts a whiskey selection hard to find in Lisbon, with references from several countries.

Mon–Wed 12:00–4:00 PM / 7:00 PM–12:00 AM; Thu–Fri 12:00–4:00 PM / 7:00 PM–1:00 AM; Sat–Sun 12:00 PM–12:00 AM.

Lobo do Mar

From fishermen to fishermen. This is how the story of Lobo do Mar begins, and today, the restaurant is a reference for those seeking excellent grilled fish. The process is simple: you go to the counter, just like at a market, choose your fish, and take a seat. In another room, the majestic grill stands—fish is prepared right beside it, and everything happens in front of the customer.
