Câmara de Lobos €€

Santo António

It’s one of the most iconic restaurants in the area. It started almost 60 years ago as a tavern where people just snacked and drank, but today it’s a fully-fledged establishment, more modern but still welcoming. The most requested dish is the traditional espetada, served with fried corn, fries, and salad.

Mon-Sun 12:00 PM-11:00 PM.

Camacha €€

Abrigo do Pastor

It was indeed once a shelter for hunters and shepherds, but today it’s a popular traditional restaurant. The dining room is spacious, and the specialty is meats prepared over fire. It’s a great place, for example, to try the famous espetada (meat skewers), roasted on a grill and served directly on the skewer. There are also game dishes.

Mon-Sun 11:00 AM-11:00 PM.

Camacha €€

Casa de Abrigo do Poiso

In the middle of the mountains, surrounded by forest, an old building has been transformed into a traditional restaurant. Some come just for the poncha (a local drink), but we recommend the full experience. The soups are a must, especially the typical tomato and onion soup, but the meats are also excellent.

Zambujeira do Mar €€

A Barca Tranquitanas

It’s one of the most well-known restaurants in the area, and for good reason. For 50 years, these tables have been a safe haven for great feasts. The fish and seafood mostly come from Porto das Barcas, right nearby. It has a terrace with a sea view and a good wine list.

Tue-Sun 12:00 PM-12:00 AM.

Vila Nova de Milfontes €€€

Tasca do Celso

It’s one of the most praised and sought-after restaurants on the Costa Vicentina, a must-stop in Vila Nova de Milfontes. José Ramos Cardoso, known as “Celso,” is responsible for the fame of the house. Looking for good traditional Alentejan cuisine? Look no further. Whether for snacks or well-composed dishes.

Tue-Sun 1:00 PM-3:30 PM, 7:30 PM-11:30 PM.

Mourão

Adega Velha

Here’s an Alentejan tavern that never fails or disappoints. It’s simple and honest. At the entrance, there’s the tavern counter, a meeting point for the village. The tables are just behind, spaced between giant barrels. For food, as expected, all the Alentejan specialties are here, from chickpea stew to migas with pork.

Tue-Sat 11:00 AM-3:00 PM, 7:00 PM-10:00 PM / Sun 11:00 AM-3:00 PM.

Monsaraz €€

Sem-Fim

The space is atypical and picturesque, a former olive oil press converted into a restaurant. That alone could be worth the visit, but the food, typically Alentejan, is also very good. On the walls, you’ll often find art exhibitions because Sem-Fim is also a gallery.

Thu-Tue 11:00 AM-12:00 AM.

Monsaraz €€

Sabores de Monsaraz

The view of the Alqueva reservoir, the largest artificial lake in Europe, is breathtaking. But there’s more to it than that. Located in the medieval village, it focuses on Alentejan recipes with hearty, home-style food (and generous portions). It’s usually busy, so it’s best to book.

Tue 7:30 PM-10:30 PM / Wed-Sun 12:30 PM-3:30 PM, 7:30 PM-10:30 PM.

Mértola €€

Tamuje

With a view of the Guadiana River, Tamuje is a traditional restaurant with several typical Alentejan dishes, from tomato soup to migas and açorda. If you’re lucky, you might catch a night of fado or Alentejan singing.

Mon-Wed 12:00 PM-3:00 PM, 7:30 PM-10:00 PM / Fri-Sat 12:00 PM-3:00 PM, 7:30 PM-10:00 PM.

Marvão €€

Mil-Homens

Open since 1967 in the village of Portagem, Marvão, this establishment has maintained its family recipes for three generations. The menu dives into old recipes, with sarapatel (made with lamb offal, orange, and mint) as the star of the menu. The lamb stew is also highly recommended.

Tue-Sat 12:30 PM-3:00 PM, 7:30 PM-10:00 PM / Sun 12:30 PM-3:00 PM.
