Estremoz €€€

Casa do Gadanha

You’ve always eaten well in Estremoz, but in recent years the city has become a gastronomic destination, largely thanks to the work of the couple Michele Marques and Ruben Trindade. It all started at Mercearia Gadanha, where Michele pays homage to the Alentejo with signature dishes. Ruben, on the other hand, heads the restaurant at Casa do Gadanha, where you can either share dishes at the table or opt for the tasting menu, always seasonal and reflective of the region.

Comporta €€€

Cavalariça

Opened in 2018, it quickly became Comporta’s breakout restaurant, then under the creative direction of chef Bruno Caseiro. Today, Cavalariça remains one of the region’s reference tables—even after the founding chef’s departure—and it has already added a new location in Évora. In Comporta, the menu is still seasonal, making the most of local produce and the proximity to the sea. The philosophy stands: dishes designed to be shared, without fuss.

Elegant and beautifully designed, the restaurant boasts a team of master chefs. In 1993, its matriarch, Maria Alice Marto, earned a Michelin star, which she retained for three years.

MA

Just steps from Sé Velha, the door at 13 Rua do Norte remains closed, but the Michelin plaque leaves no doubt—this is where MA, a Japanese restaurant, is hidden. Ring the doorbell and step into an intimate space with a 12-seat counter and tables for 18. The minimalist atmosphere reflects the menu’s focus on quality and seasonality.

Noélia

When talking about restaurants in the Algarve, Noélia (named after its renowned chef) is usually the first recommendation—and for good reason: dishes full of flavor and high-quality ingredients, mostly sourced locally. The chef is passionate about the Ria Formosa and pays tribute to it through her food. While the starters are more creative, the main courses are classics, like the famous lemon rice with corvina. q
