Karater

Guram Baghdoshvili lived and worked many years in Portugal before returning to Georgia, where he became a media figure and an ambassador for his country’s cuisine. In 2024 he came back to Lisbon and opened Karater in Bairro Alto. In a former dairy shop, the chef serves khinkali, khachapuri, and other classics with Portuguese ingredients and an amphora‑wine list that pays homage to Georgia’s winemaking tradition. It’s also a place with serious cool.

Yakuza

Among Olivier da Costa’s several concepts, Yakuza is one of his most solid brands. Near Avenida da Liberdade, the restaurant’s fusion sushi sits alongside Japanese grill offerings, hot dishes, and the odd unexpected creation—no Olivier restaurant without a good dose of surprise. The space is beautiful, vibrant, and lively.

Kanazawa

The setting is unassuming, in a housing development in Algés, but it’s worth the detour. Kanazawa is a singular restaurant with only eight seats, led by Paulo Morais, a master of Japanese cuisine. The cooking is kaiseki, marked by seasonality and excellence of product. Among the four tasting menus, each moment is conceived as a ritual.

Kabuki

At Kabuki, the Spanish brand that landed in the Ritz galleries in 2021, Japanese cuisine and technique intertwine with Mediterranean flavors and ingredients. A Michelin star followed soon after. The full experience unfolds in the tasting menu, but there are also à la carte options and a bar where you can snack.

Omakase Wa

Omakase Wa opened with little fanfare but quickly became a reference point for those seeking a carefully crafted Japanese experience. Chef Ashik Yonjan, a Nepalese trained in Portugal, runs the counter with natural ease, warmth, and precision. The single menu, with about 15 moments, is served to everyone at the same time, turning the ten-seat room into a collective experience.

Davvero

A classic Italian restaurant that still feels contemporary. Respecting gastronomic tradition, the menu focuses on northern Italy, with rigorous attention to ingredient quality and seasonality. The sophisticated setting—with open kitchen and terrace—invites unhurried meals. Ideal for leisurely lunches or special dinners.

Izakaya

In Japan, an izakaya is a place where food accompanies drinks rather than the other way around, but that doesn’t mean the dishes are overlooked. In Cascais, Tiago Penão’s Izakaya, with a counter seating just over ten people, exemplifies this perfectly. The music is loud, the lights are low, and the service is quick and lively. Small dishes are designed to be shared.

Almada €€

Blitz Pizza

What began almost as a joke is now a serious—yet very laid-back—business. In Costa da Caparica, right on the beachfront avenue, Blitz Pizza quickly became a must-stop on Lisbon’s South Bank (Margem Sul) thanks to its artisanal pizzas. The space is small, with the oven at the center. There’s a great outdoor terrace and a cool vibe. More recently, the duo running the restaurant also introduced a list of natural wines and some sandwiches.

Trickys

With music setting the mood, as international as the menu, Tricky’s manages to surprise with every visit. The dishes are packed with flavor. João Magalhães Correia works with Portuguese ingredients, blending them with Italian and Asian influences. The low-intervention wines are a perfect match.

Mezze refers to the Middle Eastern small plates that make up a shared table, and it’s also the name of a unique restaurant in Lisbon, created by the Pão a Pão Association with the noble mission of integrating Middle Eastern refugees. Located in the Mercado de Arroios, it’s bright and welcoming.
